Avast Ye Scurvy Dogs!

…or something like that.

Piracy is now available as an ebook. Amazon (all) can provide it direct for kindle and if you have a different type of ereader then the epub or mobi files are available from Wizards Tower Press. Later this month Spacewitch will be officially launching and the ebook will be available there too.

A quick reminder you can also buy the book on Lulu by clicking the button on the right hand sidebar of this page.

We will be giving away one complete set of Fox Pockets print editions by subscription (get yours as the author copies go out) with a competition in our newsletter. Simply enter your email address in the subscribe link in the toolbar. The newsletter will never be more than quarterly and often isn’t that frequent so you don’t have to worry about being bombarded.

Finally, Fox Spirit will be launching Noir Carnival with Spacewitch, the books editor K.A. Laity and writers James Bennett and Chloe Yates at Edge.Lit on 13th July at Derby Quad. There will be plenty of other members of the FS skulk there happy to chat and sign things so come along.

‘Girl at the End of the World’ a call for submissions

Ok foxy folk we have a new anthology call for Christmas Release.

‘Girl at the End of the World’.

What we want: pre, during, post and not remotely related to apocalyptic stories, in the SF, Fantasy, Horror and Crime genres. Clearly female lead characters who pack a punch. Roughly speaking 5,000-10,000 words per story.

It’ll be £10 token payment, a copy of the finished book and if it clears it’s costs profit share for the first two years sales.

The closing date is 31st August 2013 so we can get it sorted in time for a Christmas release, because nothing says Merry Christmas like the end of the world.

These details will be added to the submissions page, where you can already find details of house style etc for your story submission.

If you’ve submitted in the last week or so to any of our other books I will be updating the tracker soon, sorry for the delay.

Also we are still accepting author posts for the blog.

Piracy Teaser

For your delectation, the first few hundred words of the opening story from Piracy.

Becalmed
Den Patrick
‘We’ll live like kings,’ the captain said. ‘We’ll not want for anything. Even death will turn his face from us.’
That’s what the captain said.

No one has seen him in three days now. He retired to his quarters and locked the door. The first day was all crying. The second day there were voices tangled in dispute, then a scream. We’ve not heard anything since. No one wants to go in there.

We’re becalmed. The sea is as flat as any mirror, reflecting the dull grey of the sky. The sun is a smudge of white light behind indistinct clouds that stretch to the horizon in every direction. Rotting fish float in the water, unholy flotsam, and I know in the marrow of my bones we’ve brought this on ourselves.

The Absent Friend isn’t like most ships, certainly not most pirate ships. Not that I’m an expert. This is my
first time signed on under that shady profession. Still, how many ships willingly let women aboard? Much
less three of them. And the none-too-small issue of them being witches. The captain calls them theurges,
and I dare say there are prettier names, but we all know they’re witches. They were part of the captain’s great
plan.

‘We’ll go ashore at night,’ he said, ‘only small towns mind.’ He was a hearty man in his fifties with a tangle of dun brown hair and a beard touched with grey. He wore a patch, but only to cover his cock eye and protect his vanity. His parrot had shed most of its feathers, always sick and withdrawn. ‘The theurges will scale the rooftops and position themselves by the chimneys,’ he looked around, daring us to speak out. ‘Your job will be to carry the dreams back to the ship.’

We all laughed at that. The parrot flapped its stunted wings and shat, jetting foul grey liquid across
the captain’s frock coat. ‘Dreams? What use have we for dreams?’ snarled Horgan. He was as sour as they came; his crimes didn’t stop at pillaging. They said he had cruel tastes to match his temper. ‘You’re all here because you lost something,’ replied the captain with one hand on the hilt of his cutlass. ‘Some of you have a name for the thing you lost, and some of you don’t.’ He eyed Horgan and there was an uncomfortable pause. ‘Some of you might even deny your loss, but no man becomes a pirate unless he’s missing something. Maybe you never lost it,’ his eyes settled on me, ‘perhaps you lacked it from birth.’

A bits and bobs kind of day

So  much has been happening here and with our friends over at Anachron so this is quick round up.

First of all two new books came out from FS in October

Weird Noir, edited by K.A.Laity was released on Halloween, is now available on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk. Weird Noir is a fantastic collection of unusual happenings.

Earlier in October we released Spares, a novella by Alec McQuay which explores what happens if the body can’t die, friendship and betrayal. Also available on Amazon.com and amazon.co.uk

Nun & Dragon got some coverage as part of Jasper Bark’s regular This is Horror column where Simon Bestwick talks about his story.

Our first newsletter will be going out a few days later than intended, but very shortly. We’ve also sent out the invites to the next two volumes of Bushy Tales.

That’s about it from us next up the exciting news from Anachron.

First of all they just announced the forthcoming Pulp Line Vol 1 a collection of four short stories by Jack Calico. They are inviting open submissions for the pulp line.

They’ve also just released Crime Net, a group of tales about the sinister side of technology.

Halloween Release

Out tomorrow!

‘On the gritty backstreets of a crumbling city, tough dames and dangerous men
trade barbs, witticisms and a few gunshots. But there’s a new twist where
urban decay meets the eldritch borders of another world: WEIRD NOIR.

Featuring thugs who sprout claws and fangs, gangsters with tentacles and the
occasional succubus siren. The ambience is pure noir but the characters
aren’t just your average molls and mugs—the vamps might just be vamps. It’s
Patricia Highsmith meets Shirley Jackson or Dashiell Hammett filtered
through H. P. Lovecraft. Mad, bad and truly dangerous to know, but
irresistible all the same.’

K.A.Laity introduces and edits this exciting treat of anthology released on 31st October 2012 by Fox Spirit Books. Happy Halloween
